Braces vs Clear Aligners in India: Cost, Time and Trade-offs
Aligners are not simply the premium version of braces. For some cases they are the wrong tool at three times the price.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Ashay Jain, BDS

Clear aligners are marketed as the modern upgrade to braces. Clinically, they're a different instrument with a different range. Choosing between them on aesthetics alone is how people end up two years in with a result that didn't finish.
The numbers, first
- Metal braces: ₹25,000–₹60,000 · 18–30 months
- Ceramic (tooth-coloured) braces: ₹35,000–₹80,000 · 18–30 months
- Lingual braces (behind the teeth): ₹80,000–₹2,00,000 · 24–36 months
- Clear aligners: ₹80,000–₹3,00,000 · 6–24 months
Metros sit at the top of each range. Retainers afterwards — non-negotiable, for both — add ₹3,000–₹15,000.
What aligners are genuinely better at
- Appearance during treatment. The real reason most adults choose them, and a legitimate one.
- Cleaning. You take them out to brush and floss normally. Braces make hygiene harder, and decalcification marks around brackets are a real risk in patients who don't keep up.
- Fewer emergency visits. No broken brackets or poking wires.
- Mild to moderate crowding and spacing. This is their home ground, and they do it well.
What braces are still better at
- Complex movements. Rotating a round tooth like a premolar, moving roots bodily, closing extraction spaces, correcting significant bite discrepancies. Fixed appliances apply forces aligners struggle to reproduce.
- Patients who won't comply. Aligners work 20–22 hours a day. If they're in a pocket, nothing moves. Braces don't care about your discipline — this is why they remain the default for teenagers.
- Cost. For the same result in a moderate case, braces are usually a third of the price.
The compliance question is the real question
Aligner treatment fails for one reason far more than any other: not wearing them enough. Twenty-two hours a day means you take them out to eat and to brush, and they go straight back in. If you know you'll leave them out through a long dinner and forget them overnight, braces will finish faster and cost less.
Be careful with direct-to-consumer aligners
Aligner brands that skip the in-person examination — impressions posted to you, no X-rays, no orthodontist reviewing progress — are cheaper for a reason. Orthodontic movement without a radiographic assessment of root and bone position can cause root resorption and gum recession. Any aligner treatment should involve an orthodontist who has seen your X-rays and reviews you periodically.
Retainers: the part everyone skips
Teeth move back. Not sometimes — by default. Retainers are worn nightly, effectively indefinitely, and the people who lose their result are almost always the ones who stopped after a year. Factor retainer cost and habit into your decision for both options.
How to decide
Get an orthodontic consultation — usually ₹300–₹1,000 — with X-rays. Ask specifically: "Is my case treatable with aligners to the same standard as with braces?" A straight answer to that question is worth more than any comparison article, including this one.

Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For mild to moderate crowding and spacing, yes — provided they are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. For complex bite corrections, significant rotations, or cases requiring extractions and bodily root movement, fixed braces remain more predictable.
What is the cheapest way to straighten teeth in India?
Metal braces from a qualified orthodontist, typically ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 including regular adjustments. Avoid choosing on price alone: an incomplete or poorly planned orthodontic treatment costs far more to correct than it saved.
Can I get braces as an adult?
Yes. Adult orthodontics is common and there is no upper age limit, provided your gums and supporting bone are healthy. Treatment may take slightly longer than in teenagers because adult bone remodels more slowly, and any gum disease must be treated first.
